Quiet on the set at the Sweat Morin Homestead: Filming took place on Jan. 16 at the Sweat Morin Homestead on School Street, Sanford, for an upcoming short film by Chris Malenfant titled “Hex.” The Homestead was a perfect setting for portions of the story, which is set in 18th-century New England. Filmed in black and white, it tells a powerful story of love, and perhaps evident from the title, there is even a witch.

The public has voted on who’s the BOSS: Friends of Downtown has posted the winners of the 2024 Best of Sanford and Springvale (BOSS) Awards — the best pizza, ice cream, salon, barbershop, mechanic, and more. Check out the Friends of Downtown Facebook page to see who won.

New dental assistant receives her certification: Nasson Health Care announced that Madison Strate recently passed the Certified Dental Assistant examination administered by the Dental Assisting National Board. This prestigious, nationally recognized certification honors each recipient’s commitment to providing the highest quality of care possible to their patients and their passion for maintaining the technical knowledge needed to do so.

Recovery and training center update from county manager: Sanford-Springvale Rotary Club recently hosted guest speaker Greg Zinser, county manager for York County. Zinser shared information regarding two initiatives targeted to open in 2026: the York County Substance Use Treatment and Recovery Center and the York County First Responder Training Facility. Situated on more than 100 acres in Alfred, the buildings are designed to handle critical needs in the community: providing low-barrier access with a full continuum of care for individuals struggling with substance use disorder and ensuring first responders and public safety workers receive the needed quality training.

The recovery center will provide 24/7 comprehensive, individualized care for those in York County aged 18+ who are seeking recovery from substance use disorders. The center will promote holistic healing through tailored treatment plans and ongoing aftercare support. The training facility, which will serve as a regional training hub, will provide state-of-the-art facilities that emphasize preparedness, skill enhancement, and excellence in public safety and emergency response. The facility will also house an Emergency Logistics Operations Center, playing a crucial role in disaster response coordination. FMI, go here.

Local nonprofit starts the year grateful for grantor and donor support: Grahamtastic Connection received generous support from area resources recently to help the organization in its mission — to provide free, essential technology to children battling cancer and other serious illnesses. They have been awarded a $30,000 grant from The Evelyn S. and K.E. Barrett Foundation, based in York, with a pledge of an additional $30,000 for next year. The organization also received a $5,000 donation from Ken and Sue Katz, and $5,000 from Ryan Archie, owner of Wireless Zone, a Verizon retailer, at 1209 Main St. in Sanford. Through this funding, the children whom Grahamtastic Connection serves will be able to continue their education during treatment while remaining connected to family, friends and their medical providers.
