Lorraine C. Ashworth, 93, of Sanford, passed away on Jan. 27, 2025, at Avita of Wells. She was born in Sanford on April 11, 1931, a daughter of Joseph A. and Aurore (Dube) St. Laurent. Lorraine graduated high school at the Presentation of Mary Academy. She raised her family in Sanford before moving to Teaticket, MA, where she and her husband Jim built their dream home. She enjoyed flower gardening, singing, dancing, reading, and travel. Before retiring, Lorraine worked at the Falmouth Town Hall and the Falmouth Public Library. She was an active member of the St. Ignatius Church in Sanford, and St. Anthony’s Church on the Cape. She moved back to Maine in 2023 to be closer to family. Lorraine is predeceased by her husband, James G. Ashworth, her sisters Sister Jeanne d’Arc St. Laurent and Sister Rita St. Laurent, and her brothers Lionel St. Laurent and Roger St. Laurent. She is survived by three daughters, Joan Ashworth-Wulf and Laurie Ashworth, both of Salem, OR, and Elizabeth Chase of Wells, two grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her sisters Madeline Bucklin of Sanford, Claire Guillemette of York, and Louise Thibaudeau of Milton, NH. Suzanne R. Cochran

Suzanne R. Cochran, 70, of Sanford, passed away peacefully with her husband and son by her side on Jan. 22, 2025, after a short battle with cancer. She was born on April 19, 1954, in Sanford, the daughter of Lionel and Jeannette Lachance (Michaud). She graduated from Sanford High School in 1973 and went on to attend Pierre’s School of Cosmetology. Sue began work at a young age at Gay’s Hideaway and Villa Café in Springvale, at King’s Department Store in Sanford and most notably for 20 years at Hannaford in Wells, ending in 2020. She was married to Scott Barraclough, with whom she had her only son, Adam. In 2003, she married Gary Cochran; they adored each other for 21 amazing years in both Sanford and Lady Lake, FL. Sue enjoyed gardening in her younger years, crafting in and out of the house, motorcycle rides with Gary through the White Mountains, and hosting annual Christmas parties for close friends and work colleagues. When she and Gary retired, they held dual residency in Maine and Florida. Sue is survived by her husband Gary, son Adam Barraclough of Enid, OK; Gary’s daughter, Kristen Clark, and her husband Eric and their daughter Amelia of Shapleigh; brother Thomas Lachance and wife Denise Lachance of Saco; sister Martha Lachance and wife Barbara Lachance of Sanford and a number of cousins, nieces and nephews. Visitation and/or celebration arrangements will be announced at a later date when her last journey north takes place in the spring or summer.

Irving Jackson Patterson

Irving Jackson Patterson, 87, passed away peacefully on Monday, Jan. 20, 2025, at Maine Medical Center in Biddeford. Irving was born on August 14, 1937, and grew up on a family farm on Patterson Road in Hampden. Irving was a 1955 graduate of Foxcroft Academy and a 1959 graduate of University of Maine, College of Engineering. It was at Foxcroft Academy that he met his future wife, Lorene Annis, at the age of 15. They were childhood sweethearts and were married in 1957 in Dover-Foxcroft. Irving started his mechanical engineering career at US Gypsum in Lisbon Falls. The family relocated to Sanford, where he was a facility engineer at the former Cyanamid Corp. He left engineering and entered into an eventual partnership with John Garnsey and Len Sevigny at Garnsey Brothers Insurance, Real Estate and Travel Centers. He and Lorene worked together, as a team, with all the other fine coworkers for 15 years. He had a lot of fond memories of working with all his sons. He was extremely proud of each of them. He offered guidance but allowed them to pursue their own dreams. He and Lorene took a brief hiatus from working with their sons to move to Pensacola in 1991. They returned to Maine in 1994 to finish their careers working with their sons. Irving officially retired from Patco Construction in 2001 but was always working “deals” until the end. Irving set the standard for volunteerism for his sons to aspire to. He was predeceased by his parents and brother Joel. He is survived by his loving wife Lorene, who was truly his best friend and soulmate for over 67 years; brother Allen and wife Joanne, two favorite sisters-in-law, Carol Patterson and Dorna Varnum Zillinsky; sons Jeffrey and his partner Helen, Mark and his wife Suzanne, Gregory and his wife Heather, Michael and his wife Bonnie, and David. He is also survived by 11grandchildren and six nieces. A celebration of his life will be held on Sunday, March 9, at the Sanford Elks Lodge, 13 Elm St., from 3-7 pm.

Herbert “Herb” Allen Young

Herbert “Herb” Allen Young, 95, of Sanford passed away on Tuesday, Jan. 21, 2025. He was married to Charlotte (Aldrich) Young on Nov. 10, 1951. Herbert and Charlotte moved to Sanford in 1962 and raised their family. Herbert served in the Korean conflict from 1950 through 1953 as a staff sergeant with the 7th Infantry Division of the Army Corps of Engineers and later became active with the Sanford VFW, Post 9935. He served for a time as post commander as well as other offices in the VFW. Herbert was a master plumber and was also employed for many years until his retirement at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard as both a pipefitter in Shop 56 and as a planner and estimator. He was proud of the work on submarines. He was active for many years in the Free and Accepted Masons as a 3rd Degree Master Mason at the Tyrian Lodge in Mechanic Falls. Among Herbert’s recreational passions were deer and bird hunting, fishing and woodworking. After retirement, he took an interest in golf and was a member of the Sanford Country Club. Herb was predeceased by his wife Charlotte and his grandson Andrew. He is survived by his four children: Arthur (Denise) Young of Hooksett, NH; Thomas (Barbara) Young of Graham, NC; Susan (James) Mitchell of Springvale; Allan (Susan) Young of Sanford; seven grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. The funeral took place at the First Baptist Church, 905 Main St., Sanford, on Jan. 29.
