Agents from multiple police agencies raided a house at 8 York St. Tuesday morning, detained 17 people and eventually arrested six people, one for aggravated drug trafficking, according to the Maine Drug Enforcement Agency.

John Leroy Gray 44, of Sanford was charged with two counts of aggravated trafficking in fentanyl. Bail at York County Jail was set at $25,000 cash. Five others were charged with a variety of lesser offenses, including possession of drugs, theft, breaking probation and failing to appear in court on earlier charges.

In a search of the house, police seized approximately 40 grams of fentanyl, $1,800 in suspected drug proceeds, and additional evidence of illegal drug trafficking. Four realistic pellet-type handguns were located throughout the residence. No firearms were found.

The house had been under surveillance for a month after neighbors tipped off police.

“During the investigation, agents and officers observed activity consistent with illegal drug trafficking as well as individuals trafficking illegal drugs being armed with firearms. During the investigation, a number of undercover purchases of fentanyl were made from Gray,” according to a press release from MDEA.

Empowered with a search warrant, police raided the house at 9:30 a.m. Due to seriousness of the suspected activity, potential presence of firearms, and neighborhood setting, police warned the public away from the neighborhood. The Southern Maine Special Response Team helped make the scene safe for agents.

Assisting agents in this investigation and raid were members of the Sanford Police Department, Sanford Fire/Rescue, Sanford Police Animal Control, York County Sheriff’s Office, FBI Safe Street Task Force, Federal Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) Southern Maine Special Response Team, and City of Sanford Code Enforcement.
