Sanford High School Honors Military Veterans During Basketball Doubleheader

The Sanford High School boys’ and girls’ basketball teams hosted a Military Appreciation Night during its doubleheader against Noble on Tuesday, January 28 at Partners Bank Gymnasium. The doubleheader featured new uniforms unveiled by both teams to show support for military service members.

The evening began with a ceremony honoring six SHS faculty members who have served in the military. These veterans were introduced to the crowd, with their distinguished service records shared with the community.

The honored faculty members include Russell Clark, an 11-year U.S. Air Force veteran who served as a Pilot in Strategic Air Command and received multiple commendations, including the Air Force Commendation Medal.

Raymond Demarett served four years as a Petty Officer in the U.S. Navy, while Chris Jeney dedicated four years to the U.S. Army National Guard in West Virginia. Peter O’Brien served six years in the U.S. Air Force, reaching the rank of Staff Sergeant, and Matt Petermann achieved the same rank during his decade of service in the U.S. Army. Shaun Rowe rounded out the group, having served four years in the Army National Guard as an E-4 Specialist.

The celebration included a special presentation of the game ball to the veterans and a commemorative photo with the basketball team captains. Adding to the evening’s significance, the SHS council organized a 50/50 raffle benefiting the Travis Mills Foundation, an organization dedicated to supporting post-9/11 veterans and their families through various programs designed to help them overcome physical and emotional challenges.

On the court, the Lady Spartans beat Noble 59-20. Sadie Sevigny led the scoring with 12 points, while teammates Ava Hudson and Mollie Puffer each contributed 9 points to the win. In the boys’ contest, despite a hard-fought game, the Spartans fell to Noble 76-66.
