The Maine Turnpike Authority (MTA) continues to warn about an E-Z Pass smishing scam. The scam involves fraudulent text messages that resemble their website. The message falsely claims there’s unpaid tolls from a recent trip and threatens an additional fee if the balance is not settled promptly. It provides a link to respond.
The MTA has confirmed that these messages are NOT legitimate. The Maine Turnpike Authority does not use text messages or emails to collect toll payments. Instead, any correspondence regarding violations is sent via U.S. Mail.
The best thing to do with these fraudulent texts or emails is to delete them immediately. Responding by clicking on the link will lead to scammers looking to steal your personal information and money.
