For four weeks, about two dozen York County residents, including many from Sanford, got an education in police work through the first-ever Citizen Police Academy presented by the York County Sheriff’s Department.

Participants, who ranged from 20 years old to senior citizens, heard presentations from several police officers, saw videos and asked lots of questions. The topics included use of police dogs, citizens’ search and seizure rights, and the many hats that officers wear, from law enforcement to school resource officer.

Students were shown the variety of equipment officers wear each shift, weighing about 25 pounds. They got a tour of the county jail and were offered the opportunity for a ride-along and a CPR certification class.

The course wound up with a graduation ceremony with certificates, photos, and a tote bag full of goodies. A reception followed, which included the opportunity to sample many different chilis that were part of a contest. All attendees expressed gratitude for this comprehensive opportunity.

The Citizen Police Academy graduates are: Ross Albertson, Dennis Bailey, Christopher Benson, Alex Blow, Frank Brackin, James Daniels, Robert Dyer, Jonathan Fallon, Krista Freeman, Richard Freeman, Tracy Gaudet, Patricia Guay, Bruce Hagan, Joseph Harris, Paul Hodak, Linda Letourneau, Victoria Lynn, Dennis McDonald, David McQuade, Martha Morrison, Matt Ryan, Rosanna Ryan, Kevin Spainhour, Steve Veit, Tim Veit, Tom Veit, and Janet Vincent.
