Martial arts students earn medals at recent New England competitions: Thy’s Taekwon-Do of Sanford recently took teams of students to tournaments in Winslow, Maine, and Connecticut and came home with 42 medals. The achievement is “a testament to their hard work, discipline and perseverance,” according to a press release from Meagan Boulter. “We extend our sincere congratulations to all participating students for their exceptional performances. A special recognition goes to those who competed in both tournaments: Yashiwas Wood, Myles Dence, Ronan Woods and Winnie Woods. Your commitment and determination are truly admirable, and we are incredibly proud of your accomplishments.”

Police seek help with Bodwell Street stabbing: Sanford police secured an arrest warrant for Jonathan Gillis, 23, of Sanford in connection with a stabbing on Bodwell Street last week. The warrant charges Gillis with aggravated assault, a Class B crime. Police are asking for help locating Gillis. If you can help, contact the Sanford Regional Communications Center at 207-324-3644, option 1. The victim of the stabbing was treated at MaineHealth and later released.

Dog park cleanup dates set, volunteers needed: A spring cleanup at the Sanford Dog Park is scheduled for May 4, from 1 to 3 pm. Anyone available to help is asked to bring rakes and shovels. The organizers also need a volunteer who has a truck with a dump sticker to help dispose of the leaves and someone with a tractor to help clean up packed debris. In case of inclement weather, the rain date for the cleanup is May 10, from 1 pm to 3 pm. The park will be closed during clean-up hours. Organizers are also requesting help to spread mulch, which will be delivered on May 6. Email questions to sanfordmedogpark@gmail.com.

Gardening workshop at the Sanford Community Garden: The public is invited to attend an organic gardening workshop along with community gardeners on April 26 at 10 am. Topics to be covered include soil preparation, early garden care, and the use of floating row cover for the control of insects, which will be demonstrated by Master Gardeners Volunteers Lora Gurwala and Bud Johnston. The Sanford Community Garden, an activity of the Mousam Way Land Trust, is located on Blanchard Road just under a mile from its intersection with Hanson Ridge Road.

Poetry reading features four Maine poets: A Poets Reading, sponsored by the Sanford Arts Commission, will take place April 27 at 3 pm at the Sanford-Springvale Historical Museum, 505 Main St. in Springvale. The event will feature Maine poets Melissa Alipalo, Jeanne Bamforth, Jonathan Pessant and Ruth Towne. April is National Poetry Month and this year’s theme is “This Is the World I Want to Live In. High honor for Water District chief: Sanford Water District Superintendent David Parent has received the 2024 Lifetime Achievement Award from the Maine Water Utilities Association.

The award recognizes Parent’s more than four decades of service and contributions to the water profession in Maine and beyond. It was presented to him at the association’s recent quarterly meeting by Keith Levasseur, board member and district engineer for the Sanford Water District.

“David’s legacy is one of unwavering commitment, leadership, and public service,” Levasseur said. “He has not only strengthened the water sector through his work but has inspired countless others through his example.” Parent joined the water district in the early 1980s and has been superintendent since 2011. He has also helped shape statewide water standards through the Maine Water Utilities Association and the Southern Maine Regional Water Council.

Just stick out your chin and grin and say, “I’ll try out!” Auditions for Nasson Youth Theatre’s summer production of “Annie” will be held May 9, from 5:30 to 8:30 pm, and May 10, from 2 to 5 pm. Bring a resume, headshot (if you have one), brief monologue and 16 bars of a song. The production will be directed by George Perkins with music direction by Karen Mathews and choreography by Emma Stevens. Rehearsals will begin May 18 and run Sundays through Wednesdays from 6:30 to 9:30 pm (with a few exceptions due to holidays). Show dates are scheduled for July. Sanford/Springvale, the time to flush is now: The Sanford Water District’s spring flushing program started on April 13 and will continue through May 23. Flushing the water mains, which is done twice each year (in the spring and fall), improves water quality by removing sediment that slowly builds up at the bottom of the water main over time. Flushing will happen between 10 pm and 5 am to minimize impacts to customers. For information on the areas scheduled to be flushed each week, go to the Sanford Water District website or call 207-324-2312. If the schedule needs to change for any reason, the website will be updated.

The classes provide honest, accurate information about home ownership and prepare individuals and families for the steps in the home-buying process. DPW schedule changes for Patriot’s Day: Sanford Department of Public Works (DPW) has posted its Patriot’s Day holiday schedule. The DPW will be closed Monday, April 21, and the Transfer Station will be closed Tuesday, April 22. There are no changes to the rubbish and recycling schedule for the week.
