How To Spot a Scammer

To spot a scammer, look for unsolicited contact, pressure to act quickly, requests for unusual payment methods like gift cards, and claims that seem too good to be true. Also, be wary of anyone asking for personal information or claiming to represent an organization you don’t know or trust.

Do not click any links that come to you in an email from your creditors, banks, etc. Scammers have gotten very sophisticated with logos and typefaces that look quite authentic.

Instead, back out of the email and sign in to your account on the organization’s website. If their request is legitimate, you will most likely see a message for you when you sign in.

If you suspect a scam:

  • Hang up if you receive a suspicious phone call. Contact the organization directly using a verified phone number
  • Never provide personal or financial information to anyone you don’t know and trust
  • Verify the caller. If you are unsure, hang up and call the organization through their official website or phone number
  • Report the scam to your local police department or the FTC, if you believe you’ve been targeted.
  • Trust your instincts – if it doesn’t feel right, it’s likely a scam.
