The old saying in Maine goes, “If you don’t like the weather, wait a minute.” And sometimes, that minute brings a downpour right when you’ve laced up your hiking boots. Now, some folks might see rain as a sign to head indoors, but a true Maine explorer knows that a little liquid sunshine can make for an unforgettable adventure.

Hiking in the rain isn’t about being miserable; it’s about being prepared and embracing a different kind of beauty in our woods and on our mountains. The forest transforms. Colors become richer – the greens of the moss and ferns deepen, the bark of the birches gleams. The air, washed clean, carries the scent of pine and damp earth in a way a sunny day just can’t match. Plus, you’ll often have the trails all to yourself, a quiet solitude that’s a reward in itself.

Of course, safety and comfort are key. Good rain gear is non-negotiable. A waterproof and breathable jacket and pants will keep you dry without making you feel like you’re in a sauna. Make sure your boots are waterproof too, or at least pair them with good wool socks that insulate even when damp. A waterproof cover for your backpack is a smart addition to protect your snacks and extra layers. (I have even used a garbage bag before!)

Think about your trail choice as well. Steep, rocky ascents can become slick and treacherous in the rain. Opt for gentler inclines or well-maintained paths. And always, always let someone know your route and expected return time, especially when the weather is less than ideal.

The biggest shift, though, is one of mindset. Instead of grumbling about the wet, focus on the unique experience. Listen to the rhythm of the raindrops on the leaves. Watch how the water cascades over rocks and forms temporary streams. You might even spot wildlife, like salamanders, that are more active in damp conditions.

So next time the forecast calls for showers, don’t automatically cancel your plans. Gear up, be smart, and discover the magic of a Maine hike in the rain. You might find it’s one of your most memorable adventures yet.
