SPD retirement marks two decades of service: Officer Andrew Raymond retired on June 21 after 20 years of service with the Sanford Police Department. During his career, Officer Raymond held several positions, including drug recognition expert, field training officer and Intoxilyzer instructor. Behind the badge, Officer Raymond, a US Army veteran and was an advocate for Wreaths Across America, traveling to Arlington National Cemetery to honor the nation’s fallen heroes while representing the Sanford Police Department as well as the State of Maine.

Annual Bourre benefit to help children with cancer: Sanford Elks Lodge #1470 will host the 3rd annual Ray Bourre’s Day fundraiser to benefit Maine Children’s Cancer Program on Saturday, July 12, noon – 5 pm, at Iron Tails Saloon, Route 109 in Acton. The day includes music by Rosie, food, discount drinks, raffles and auctions. A variety of prizes are available, including tickets for sporting events, sports memorabilia, gift baskets, jewelry, outdoor adventures, dining experiences and more. Sanford water ski shows and clinics begin in July: Maine Attraction Water Ski Shows at Number One Pond begin July 3 and will be held every Thursday evening during the month of July. Pre-show entertainment begins at 6 pm, followed by the main show at 6:30 pm. The team will also perform on Saturday, July 12, at 6:30 pm.

An adaptive clinic will be held Tuesday, July 8, at 6 pm. These clinics bring water skiing to those who might not be able to experience it without the team’s adaptive equipment and expert skiers. The clinics are free. Sign up here to participate.

Lace up for the race and support victims of domestic violence: Caring Unlimited, based in Sanford, is York County’s sole provider of comprehensive support services for victims of domestic violence and their children. The organization is hosting its 18th annual 5K Run/Walk and Kids’ Fun Run on Sunday, July 13, in Kennebunk. The event is a professionally timed 3.1-mile run/walk that starts and finishes along Kennebunk’s beaches. Proceeds support Caring Unlimited and ensure the organization’s free programs and services are available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.

This year’s event includes free samples and giveaways from Aroma Joe’s, awards sponsored by Marathon Sports, age group awards, and a number of finishers’ raffles and fundraiser prizes. FMI, and to register, go here.

Habitat for Humanity York County is building the Beaver Hill subdivision in Springvale, consisting of four single-family homes.

Roll up your sleeves and help a family build a place to call home: Habitat for Humanity York County is seeking volunteers of all skill levels to be part of the affordable housing project at 3 Beaver Hill Rd., Springvale. Even those with no construction experience can help since volunteers work under the guidance of an experienced construction manager. Several shifts are currently available. Summertime health and wellness opportunities abound: The Summer Program Guide from the Sanford-Springvale YMCA is available online. From swimming to health and wellness programs to enrichment opportunities, activities are offered for youth and adults. Registration for this session, which runs June 23 to August 16, opened on June 9. See what’s available in the guide.

DPW schedule for July 4 holiday: The Department of Public Works has posted that there will be no changes to the rubbish/recycling pick-up schedule for the July 4 holiday week. The Transfer Station/Debris Area will be closed on Friday, July 4. The Public Works Department will be closed on Thursday, July 3.

South Sanford transportation project needs resident feedback: The City of Sanford is partnering with MaineDOT to explore ways to improve safety and connectivity for pedestrians, bicyclists, trail users, and transit riders in South Sanford. Specifically, the city is looking to make transportation improvements along Main Street (Route 109), Alfred Road/Country Club Road (Route 4), and the Mousam River Trail. The city used feedback from its initial survey to develop preliminary design concepts. Now it has launched a second survey and is inviting Sanford residents and business owners to participate. Holdsworth Park Now Closed on Tuesdays and Wednesdays: Please note that Holdsworth Park in Springvale is now closed to the public on Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 7:30 am to 5:30 pm until August 20 for the safety of the children attending summer camp.
