Two pet dogs died and four families were left homeless when fire erupted on a porch at 10-12 North St. on Tuesday, June 24, according to the Sanford Fire Department. The fire gutted two apartments and left two other apartments smoke damaged, said Assistant Chief Brian Watkins. Fire officials are still investigating the cause of the fire, which was not of suspicious origin, he said.

The call came in about 3:50 pm and when Watkins, the first firefighter on the scene, arrived, he found the two-story porch ablaze. “We got it under control fairly quickly,” he said. All 14 or 15 people had escaped, but that was not immediately apparent. “It looked like people everywhere,” he said. “The tricky part was locating the occupants.” Watkins stated that the American Red Cross has provided funds for temporary lodging for the families.
