A narrow escape: Logan S. Ricker of Sanford had a narrow escape on April 16, when the dump truck he was driving caught fire in Arundel. Ricker saw smoke coming from the truck after turning onto Route 111 from Limerick Road and quickly pulled over. Shortly after, the vehicle was engulfed in flames. Fire departments from Arundel, Goodwins Mills and Biddeford responded. Alfred Road was closed for an extended period until Ray’s Truck Services could remove the truck. There were no injuries reported, just a lot of detours for rush hour traffic.
Ten Hut: The Southern Maine Young Marines, part of a national nonprofit organization, held a meet and greet for parents on April 23 and is actively recruiting members. The SMYM’s motto is “Strengthening the Lives of America’s Youth,” and its pillar values are discipline, leadership and teamwork. The organization is open to youth aged 8 through high school. Recruit training will be held weekly at the Amvets Post 3, 169 School St. After training, Young Marines can learn more new skills, earn rank, wear the official uniform and work toward ribbon awards for achievement in areas such as leadership, community service, swimming, academic excellence, first aid and drug resistance education. Honor Society inductees: Sanford Regional Technical Center announced the newest members of the National Technical Honor Society, who will be inducted in a ceremony at the Sanford Performing Arts Center on May 8. Read the full story and see the list of inductees here.
Produce for seniors: Sanford Farmers’ Market is participating in Maine Senior FarmShare, a program that gives income-eligible older adults the opportunity to receive $50 of local produce at no cost from Maine farmers during the growing season. In addition to farmers’ markets, more than 100 farms in Maine are authorized to participate in MSFP. Clean out the medicine cabinet: The Drug Enforcement Agency’s national Drug Take Back Day is happening Saturday, April 27, from 10 am to 2 pm. Drop your unwanted medications at the Sanford Police Department, 935 Main St.
It’s yard sale season: Sign up now to be included on the map for the Sanford/Springvale City Wide Yard Sale on May 25-26. The deadline to be included on the map is May 10.
Courthouse redevelopment: The plan to repurpose the vacant district courthouse in Springvale for housing got the go-ahead from the state last week with a new law passed by the legislature and signed by the governor. The bill gives MaineHousing and local authorities, including Sanford Housing Authority, first option to purchase the vacant courthouses in Springvale, Biddeford and York.
A year of transformation: Sweetser, the behavioral health agency that helps many families and individuals in Sanford and around southern Maine, has just released its 2024 Annual Report. Read about all the things the organization has accomplished in the past year here.
Arnie’s Ride: Register now for Arnie’s Ride on June 1, a benefit for the Maine Children’s Cancer Program organized by the Sanford Elks MCCP Committee. The ride is open to motorcycles or cars. Register by May 16 to get a commemorative T-shirt. Registration fee is $25 per rider, or $50 for Friends of Arnie. Online registration or donation is available by visiting.
