Projects and Road Work in Sanford

It’s summertime, and you know what that means: ice cream, beach days, lobster rolls, and roadway construction. Most roadwork is done in the summer because the weather provides ideal conditions, and the longer daylight hours allow for more efficient work. Additionally, summer breaks in school schedules reduce traffic.

The City of Sanford has been working hard to draw state and federal funding into our community and has been successful in creating strong partnerships through President Biden’s Bipartisan Infrastructure Law. This ensures that local tax dollars are invested efficiently in our community.

Sanford’s theme this year for roadwork is: There is potential construction at nearly every turn in Sanford/Springvale, so plan on giving yourself a little extra time to get where you need to go.

The state Department of Transportation (Maine DOT), Sanford Department of Public Works, and the water and sewerage departments will all be completing construction on or near the roadways. Here is a summary of the work being performed this construction season:

Major Projects:

  • Route 11A/Oak Street – Maine DOT LCP overlay
  • Route 224/Shaw’s Ridge Road – Maine DOT LCP overlay
  • River Street – DPW full reconstruction from Shaw Road to Spartan Drive
  • Spencer Hill Road – water main construction (Sanford Water District and DPW)
  • Circle Drive – water main construction
  • W.O. Emery Drive– water main construction
  • Grammar Road – water main construction
  • Hansons Ridge Road – water main construction
  • Route 202/Lebanon Road – Maine DOT Large Culvert Replacement
  • Citywide signalized intersections – All traffic signals being replaced by Maine DOT

BUILD Grant

  • Route 4/Alfred Road at School Street and Gavel Road – New traffic signals being constructed by Maine DOT
  • Harvard Street – DPW full reconstruction
  • Bates Street – DPW full reconstruction
  • Bowdoin Street – DPW full reconstruction
  • Turner Street at Verona – DPW full reconstruction
  • Routes 109 & 4 Roundabout – Native planting, aesthetic improvements by Sanford Garden Club
  • Pedestrian Heads-Up Safety Project – Crosswalk signs installation throughout Sanford and Springvale

Potential Light Capital Paving (LCP) projects as determined by the city manager:

  • Auger Street
  • Miller Street
  • June Street (Cottage Street to Shaw Road)
  • Beaconsfield Street
  • Nowell Street
  • Jackson Street (School Street to Pioneer Ave.)
  • Emery Street (Heritage Crossing to High Street)
  • Grove Street
  • Grove Court
  • Goodwin’s Bridge Road
  • Possible: Grove Avenue, Central Avenue, and Pioneer Avenue (from Emery Street to Central Street)
