A Familiar Ring Returns After Decades

By Jack McAdam
Around 50 years ago, I hocked my MMA (Massachusetts Maritime Academy) class ring in Salem, MA. (It’s a long story.) A few weeks ago, a classmate of mine, Geoff, called the McDougal Orchards phone number and asked for me. He asked if I had my class ring. No, I said. A friend of his had seen a 1972 MMA class ring in an antique store in Yarmouth, MA. My classmate went to the store, saying that he wanted to return the ring to its owner. The antique dealer told him to take it.
Inscribed inside the ring was “John M,” and that’s all he could make out. He checked our yearbook and saw that I was the only John M in the class of 1972.
The next day, we happened to be traveling to Falmouth, MA, to visit friends, so Geoff said he would tape an envelope with the ring inside to his home door. Thanks, Geoff! Unfortunately, it doesn’t fit on my ring finger anymore.
