B Shift celebrates a firefighter’s achievement: Sanford Fire Department’s Probationary Firefighter Cole was recently awarded his traditional helmet shield, replacing his assigned probationary shield. The awarding of the shield is done after probationary firefighters complete all training and objectives required of them during their probationary year. Cole also recently passed his Advanced EMT class final exam and is now preparing to take his national licensing exam. The members of B Shift presented Probationary FF Cole with his shield during a shift celebration to honor his achievement.
Annual book sale scheduled, seeking donations: Springvale Library will hold its Book Sale & Fall Festival on Friday, Sept. 5, and Saturday, Sept. 6, from 9 am to 2 pm on the library grounds at 443 Main Street. During the book sale on Friday, Music on the Patio will feature Mary & Company at noon. On Saturday, the book sale will continue along with the library’s Fall Festival, which will include a jewelry sale, McDougal Orchards apples, crafting for kids, and DJ music from 10 am to noon. If Mother Nature does not cooperate, the rain date will be the following week, Sept. 12 – 13.
The event organizers could also use some help leading up to and during the book sale. They are in need of volunteers to help set up, work the event, and break down after the event. Several time slots for Tuesday, Sept. 2, through Saturday, Sept. 6, are listed on the sign-up sheet found here. In addition, the library is accepting book and puzzle donations. However, no encyclopedias, textbooks, or musty and dusty books will be accepted.

Have you checked out the library’s new space? The Louis B. Goodall Memorial Library reopened in July following a $4 million renovation that added many new features to the building, including two quiet study rooms for studying, remote work, or meetings, as well as a community rental space ideal for trainings, gatherings and other events. Visitors can also enjoy the courtyard to relax.
While the library currently offers a variety of recurring programs for both children and adults, expanded offerings are being planned. The library is expected to have longer hours starting in the fall, be open on Saturdays, and offer more programs and classes. A key priority moving forward is partnering with other local organizations to host educational programs and opportunities. Stop by the library at 952 Main St. in Sanford to check out the newly renovated space and follow them on social media to stay up to date on upcoming programs and events.

Fire danger in York County remains high — no burning allowed: The ground and forests across York County are extremely dry, and officials are urging residents to refrain from all outdoor burning. No burn permits are being issued by any of York County’s 29 municipalities or the Maine Forest Service. Recent fires in Acton (8 acres started by a campfire) and Biddeford (a blaze that burned a foot beneath the forest floor and required more than 50 firefighters) demonstrate how serious the threat is. Even if some precipitation is forecasted over the next week, fire officials say it would take six inches of rainfall to significantly reduce fire danger. To avoid risking a fire, avoid any open flames outdoors, including campfires and burn piles. For current information, check out the Wildfire Danger Map, updated daily by the Maine Forest Service, here.
