Mapes Family Supports Local News

By Kendra Williams

Jonathan and Lesa Mapes, lifelong residents who stepped forward to help when Sanford lost its only local newspaper in 2023, have made another gift to keep the Sanford Springvale News in business.

The commitment is part of a family tradition of public service. Jonathan Mapes, whose grandfather Harry founded Mapes Oil in town in the 1930s, has long been active in service clubs and served on the Sanford School Committee, experiences that shaped his understanding of the importance of strong community institutions. “You learn that a healthy community doesn’t just happen on its own,” he said. “It takes people willing to step forward and support the things that matter.”

Mapes said the decision to donate again was easy because the community needs a reliable news source. “It keeps people informed and it makes sure decisions being made at City Hall are visible to everyone,” he said, especially at a time when so many communities have lost their local newspapers. “Without good local coverage, people don’t know what’s happening in their schools, their neighborhoods, or their city government,” he noted. “That’s when communities start to lose their connections.”

The family’s initial contribution enabled the Sanford Springvale News to return to producing a print edition after its revival as an online-only publication two years ago. Today, the Sanford Springvale News prints and distributes 2,000 free copies each week at more than 40 locations across the city, in addition to its e-newsletter, website, and Facebook page. The paper has expanded opportunities for local voices as well, with high school students and community volunteers contributing stories that inspire confidence and civic pride.

The family’s donation, along with the ongoing support of monthly donors and contributors to the annual fundraising appeal, have built a strong foundation for local journalism in Sanford.

For the Mapes family, it is a way of honoring their roots while strengthening the place they call home. “Sanford is a community with a lot to be proud of,” Jonathan said. “If our support can help make sure that story gets told, then it’s worth the investment.”
