You can CERTainly help: York County Emergency Management Agency is looking for folks interested in training to work as volunteers in future emergencies, including search and rescue, shelter operation and response to floods. Anyone who would like to be considered for the local Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) should complete an online form ASAP. The next 20-hour training session begins Sept. 9. The form is available here.

Pedestrian remains in hospital: Brenda Graffam, who was struck by a car while crossing Main Street in Sanford on Aug. 26, is still recovering at Maine Medical Center, according to her daughter. Angie Webber said her mother has undergone two surgeries and has several broken bones. No one has been charged in the accident, which occurred near the Central Fire Station. According to a witness, the driver had no time to stop before Graffam crossed in front of her SUV.

Motorcyclist injured: An accident on Shaws Ridge Road near Route 202 on Wednesday afternoon left a motorcyclist with serious injuries. The cyclist, a 62-year-old man from West Newfield, was in surgery on Thursday morning, according to Sanford Police Maj. Mark Dyer. The man’s name was not being released to the public. The other driver involved in the accident, Mary Gunter, 69, of Newfield, was not seriously injured. The accident was under investigation and no charges had been filed as of Thursday morning.

Chat with the chief: Sanford Police Chief Eric Small is inviting residents to an informal Q and A session Wednesday, Sept. 17, from 5-6 pm at Springvale Public Library.Those who drop by will be free to share concerns, ask questions and learn new information.

Here’s a way to fight rising inflation: St. George’s Episcopal Church, at 3 Emerson St. in Sanford, is hosting a 50-cent clothing sale and a jumble sale in September. The 50-cent sale will take place on Saturday, Sept. 13, from 9 am to 2 pm. The jumble sale will be the following Saturday, Sept. 20, from 9 am to 2 pm. Both events are open to the community.

Veterans are eligible for $20 vouchers at farmers’ market: Every Saturday during the month of September, Maine veterans and active-duty service members can get $20 worth of vouchers to be used at the Sanford Farmers’ Market. Vouchers can be picked up at the farmers’ market, held Saturdays from 8 am to noon at Central Park. All that is needed is proof of service and residency in Maine. New hours set for local driving range: Sky View Pitch and Putt has changed its hours of operation, no longer making the driving range available after hours to the general public. The business, at 1569 Main St. in Sanford, had experienced theft of balls in the field as well as alcohol consumption and vandalism on the property after hours. As a result, they are now open later for their Range Card members only. For all other customers, regular hours are 10 am – 7 pm daily, with last call at 6:30 pm.

Fundraiser aims to remember and honor veterans: Rolling Thunder Inc. is holding a fundraiser buffet to benefit the 2025 Wreaths Across America day, Dec. 13, when volunteers will place a wreath at every veteran’s grave at the Southern Maine Veterans Cemetery in Springvale. Along with some home cooking, the fundraiser will offer raffles and Rolling Thunder T-shirts. The event will take place on Saturday, Sept. 13, from 4:30 to 6 pm, at VFW Post 9935, 1 Hutchinson St. in Sanford. The cost is $10 per person. This is a cash-only event.

Class shares strategies for preventing falls in older adults: Statistics show that one in four adults age 65 and over will fall and one third of those falls will result in life-changing injuries. To reduce the occurrence of falls in older adults, Southern Maine Agency on Aging (SMAA) is offering A Matter of Balance, a falls prevention class. The class is a discussion-based program that emphasizes practical strategies to reduce the fear of falling and to increase activity levels. Participants learn to view falls and the fear of falling as controllable, set realistic goals to increase activity, change their environment to reduce fall risk factors, and exercise to increase strength and balance. Each class is designed to facilitate problem-solving to reduce the risk of falling and empower participants to stay active and independent. The 8-session class will meet Tuesdays and Thursdays from Oct. 14 to Nov. 6, 10 am – noon, at SMAA Springvale Center at the Anderson Learning Center, Bodwell Court. Learn why a good credit score matters: Atlantic Federal Credit Union is hosting a free virtual credit score seminar on Wednesday, Sept. 17, from 5:30 to 6 pm. Participants will learn how to understand and improve their credit scores and how taking those steps can improve their financial future. Register here by Sept. 16.

An easy way to help kids’ sports: Applebee’s will donate 15 percent of diners’ bills to Sanford Springvale Youth Athletic Association on Thursday, Sept. 11. Simply come in anytime between 11 am and closing and tell your server that you’re there for the fundraiser. This can also apply to online orders made after 11 am that day. It’s easier than tossing a football.

Home run helpers: Grahamtastic Connection, a Springvale-based nonprofit that helps children undergoing treatment for serious illnesses, benefitted from Partners Bank’s generosity and Sanford Mainers’ skills this season. The bank donated $600, one for each home run made by the team.

A good month for soccer: All this month, Shaw’s supermarket in Sanford will donate a dollar to Sanford Soccer for every $3 “Give Back Where It Counts” reusable bag purchased. Sanford Soccer is the organization that runs youth soccer programs at Shaw Field, including the popular regional tournament held every October.
