Compiled by Rev. Susan Murphy

Hilda Theresa Brine, 96, of Sanford, passed away at Summer Commons on Sept. 17, 2025, with her loving family by her side.

Hilda was born at her parents’ home on July 19, 1929. She was a proud graduate of Sanford High School, class of 1948. She began working first at Woolworth’s and then at McClellan’s, before becoming a bookkeeper for the Goodall Mill, where she used her skills in shorthand and business writing to excel. She retired from Sprague Electric.

At the Goodall Mill she met the love of her life, Emile Brine. Their love was evident in the numerous cards Emile sent to Hilda, all of which said, “To my gorgeous hunk of Heaven, All my love.”

Hilda enjoyed simple pleasures in life, including Sunday drives to the mountains with her family and weekend beach excursions. Like a true Mainer, she enjoyed eating lobster every week. She loved spending time with her family and friends and never wanted to miss a gathering. Her family often turned to her for help with spelling questions, as she was quick to correct them.

Hilda was predeceased by her parents; her husband, Emile Brine; her daughter, Gail Brine Bourque; and her sister, Laurette Fortin. She is survived by her children, Michael (Karen) Brine; Tom (Connie) Brine; seven grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren, and nieces Debbie Allaire, Sue Turner, and Patti Pelletier.

A memorial mass will be held at 9 am on Thursday, Oct. 2, at St. Thérèse of Lisieux Parish-Holy Family Church in Sanford. Burial will follow at 1 pm at Maine Veterans Cemetery in Augusta.
