By: Sam Bonsey, Sanford Schools Communication CoordinatorThe Sanford High School Spartans field hockey team has surged into the top 10 of the Portland Press Herald’s state rankings, climbing to ninth place following a strong start to their season.

The Spartans opened with dominant victories, shutting out South Portland/Westbrook 6-0 and beating Bonny Eagle 10-0. Senior Hailey Payeur led the offense against Bonny Eagle with two goals and three assists. Sanford then faced their first real test against Cheverus, the no. 2 ranked team in the state, falling 4-1 in their only loss of the season so far.

The team bounced back with authority against Noble, winning 5-1 behind standout performances from Reese Beaudoin and Ella Tederous, who each scored twice. Hailey Payeur and her teammate Miranda Payeur have emerged as consistent offensive threats for the Spartans throughout the early season.

Sanford’s most impressive result came in their latest outing—a hard-fought 2-2 double overtime tie against third-ranked Biddeford.

With a record of 3-1-1, Sanford appears poised to make noise in the competitive Class A south field hockey landscape this fall.
