Sinking his teeth into career development: Nasson Health Care’s Dental Director Thomas Guerrette, DMD, has been accepted into the National Network for Oral Health Access, Oral Health Leadership Institute (NOHLI) for the 2025-26 cohort. This appointment is a year-long training cohort that provides participants the opportunity to learn best practices centered on leading a high-quality oral health program at a community health center. Training is conducted both in-person and online. According to NOHLI, only a limited number of scholars are accepted into the NOHLI program for each cohort.

In other Nasson Health Care news, the provider recently posted that its dental suite expansion project is complete after nearly two years of renovations. The facility now has 12 operatories as well as a larger laboratory, offices, and a new waiting room with four check-in/check-out stations. Nasson Health Care noted that the expansion helps the facility accommodate more patients and provide improved patient care through more efficient workflows and the integration of new technology and equipment.

Class shares strategies for preventing falls in older adults: Southern Maine Agency on Aging (SMAA) is offering A Matter of Balance, a falls prevention class. Each class is designed to facilitate problem-solving to reduce the risk of falling and empower participants to stay active and independent. The 8-session class will meet Tuesdays and Thursdays from Oct. 14 to Nov. 6, 10 am – noon, at SMAA Springvale Center at the Anderson Learning Center, Bodwell Court. Read-aloud invites kids to get in the Halloween spirit: Author Ashlee Ridlon will be at the Sanford Community Adult Education library on Friday, Oct. 10, 6:30 – 7:30 pm, for a Halloween Read-Aloud and Craft event. Kids, invited to dress in pajamas or comfortable clothes, will be an active part of the read-aloud experience as Ridlon reads her award-winning book, “This Book is TOO Scary For You!” Following the reading, Halloween treats will be offered while children participate in a hands-on spooky craft. This free event is recommended for children ages 2 to 8. Signed books will be available.

Author gives Maine waterfalls talk, shares their mist-ique: Goodall Library is hosting an author talk on Hiking Waterfalls in Maine on Sat., Oct. 11, at noon. Author Greg Westrich will present a slideshow as he discusses some of the state’s most scenic waterfalls — from state and national parks to forests, wilderness areas, and city parks. Westrich has written more than a dozen guides on hiking in Maine and New Hampshire. Call 207-324-4714 to register.

Basics Insights, straight to your phone, for free: Sanford parents and caregivers can access resources and information about their child’s growth directly on their phone. Basics Insights is a free text messaging program that provides weekly messages including science-based tips, information, activities, and reminders that help to boost development for children ages birth to 4 years old. Friends of Downtown invites businesses and organizations to participate in this month’s Selfies with Scarecrows event.

Leaves are falling. Get ready to smile with a scarecrow: Friends of Downtown has opened sign-ups for local businesses and organizations to join the 5th annual Selfies with Scarecrows event. Scarecrows should be on display Oct. 17 – 31 so community members can visit and take selfies. FMI, and to sign up to display a scarecrow, go here.

Community event welcomes all to attend: A Communities Care Day will be held on Mon., Oct. 13, 8:30 am – 1 pm, at North Parish Congregational Church UCC, 895 Main St. in Sanford. The free event, serving Sanford and its surrounding communities, offers breakfast and lunch, information on available services and resources, fresh produce, clothing, bedding, coats and more. Door prizes will also be available.

Despite warm temperatures, winter and holiday planning is underway: The Salvation Army has opened its winter coat sign-up. Adults and children needing a winter coat should call Rachel at 207-324-3134.

In addition, the organization has posted its application schedule for Thanksgiving and Christmas assistance. Those requesting assistance can apply Oct. 14 – 16, Oct. 21 – 23 and Oct. 28 – 30, 10 am – noon and 1 – 2 pm. Late afternoon hours are Oct. 14, 22 and 30, 4 – 6 pm. Applicants must bring to The Salvation Army, 871 Main St. in Sanford, the following items: proof of residence and an ID, birth certificates for children, and proof of income. FMI, call 207-324-3134.

A glimpse at winter prep in the 18th century: The Sanford-Springvale Historical Society and the Sweat-Morin Homestead are hosting a special Harvest Day event, providing a unique look into how people prepared for winter in the 18th century. Demonstrations of chores like wood splitting, haying, cider making, spinning and harvesting — all using authentic tools and techniques from the era — will be on display. This free event will be held Sunday, Oct. 19, 10 am – 2 pm, at the Sweat-Morin Homestead, 374 School St. in Sanford. The homestead is handicapped accessible. Good for the budget, the garden and Mother Earth: The Trafton Center is hosting Composting 101, presented by EcoMaine, on Wed., Oct. 15, at 1:30 pm. Composting has several benefits — reducing both waste and landfills’ methane emissions, while recycling organic materials into soil-amending compost that conserves water, improves plant growth and reduces reliance on chemical fertilizers and pesticides. The practice can also save money by reducing trash disposal fees. Attendees at this free event can learn the ins and outs of composting. FMI, call the Trafton Center at 207-457-0080.

YMCA 5K sign-up is open: Registration is open for the 2025 Spooky Sprint 5K Walk/Run, a fundraiser supporting the Sanford-Springvale YMCA scholarship program, which provides financial assistance to children, adults, seniors and families.
