STEM on display at Navy virtual-reality experience: Jobs for Maine Graduates and Civics students at Sanford High School had the opportunity to gain hands-on exposure to STEM careers using virtual reality on Wednesday, Sept. 24. The U.S. Navy showcased its new “strike group” mixed-reality experience, giving students a fully immersive, hands-on look into the technology and teamwork required for every role in the Navy.
The session provided three interactive challenges and experiences. Donning a headset for the first exercise, students tested their skills on the flight deck of the USS Gerald R. Ford in a five-person mixed-reality game. They worked together in different roles — from loading fuel to flying helicopters to piloting the aircraft itself — to launching a jet from the carrier. The second challenge had students navigating an interactive world map with a range of Navy ships and vehicles to explore operations at strategic, geographic locations. In the final exercise, a full-motion flight simulator dropped students into the cockpit of a fighter jet, where they launched from an aircraft carrier with their wingman, engaged in a mission, and landed back safely on the carrier. The session gave students a chance to experience firsthand STEM careers with the Navy.
Special lunch at MCS promotes family engagement: Margaret Chase Smith Elementary School hosted its first-ever Lunch with a Loved One event on Friday, Sept. 26, bringing families together for a celebration of community and connection. Each grade level had a dedicated half-hour lunch period to spend with their families with nearly three-quarters of the school’s families participating.
Families and friends arrived with picnic blankets and lunches, ready to share quality time with their students. As a special reward for reaching 100 Pawsitive office referrals, which are awarded to students who go above and beyond with kind, respectful and responsible choices at school, Principal Tracie Hallissey and Assistant Principal Roisin McGuckin wore their pencil costumes at lunch. They will continue to wear them to boost their theme this year and reward students for their hard work.Need help with FAFSA?
