Climb the ladder, work the hose: In recognition of National Fire Prevention Week, St. Thomas School students were visited by the Sanford Fire Department on Tuesday, Oct. 14. Students brushed up on fire safety skills, learned about a firefighter’s protective gear, and even toured a fire truck.
JMG snack program gets a nice surprise: Sanford Middle School students in the Jobs for Maine Graduates (JMG) program received a grant earlier this month from the national nonprofit Explore. Act. Tell. (E.A.T.) to support the students’ SnackDash initiative. The SnackDash program helps supply classrooms with snacks to keep students fueled and focused throughout the day. Alana Perez, now a freshman at Sanford High School, applied for the grant last May while still at the middle school, creating and filming her own video submission on behalf of the JMG students.
Elementary choir starts the year on a high note: Students in Carl J. Lamb Elementary School’s Spartan Show Choir were honored to perform at the Maine chapter of the American Choral Directors Association (ACDA) annual Fall Conference on Friday, Oct. 10. More than 70 music educators from across the state gathered at Windham High School for the conference. Among the day’s highlights was a performance by CJL’s Spartan Show Choir, which was personally invited by Julia Edwards, president of the ACDA’s Maine chapter.
CJL’s young performers presented a four-song program called “When I Grow Up,” featuring soloist performances from students Emmy French, Madilynn Peck, Disney Bolduc, Tommie Bolduc, Ahna Boyd, Ridleigh Guertin and Emelia LeHoux. After Guertin performed her solo in “I’m Still Standing,” the Windham High School Chamber Singers appeared from the back of the room to join the elementary students for a surprise fourth song, which was accompanied by a slideshow of baby photos from both groups.
The Spartan Show Choir, CJL’s auditioned vocal ensemble for third- and fourth-grade students, is now in its third season. For many in the choir, however, this was their first time singing in front of such a large audience. Read the full story here.
SHS Study Buddies are back: National Honor Society students at Sanford High School are offering the Study Buddies program again this year, held 2:30 – 3:30 pm every Thursday, to provide afterschool academic support to students seeking help. Offering support and guidance, Study Buddies can help students review assignments, keep up with class work, and work toward improving their grades. Those needing help should visit B143 (Mrs. White’s room) in the lower red wing. For those who need a ride after the session, the high school’s activity bus picks up in front of the school at 3:50 pm on Thursdays.
A pen pal partnership tradition: St. Thomas School students in grades 7 and 8 met with their pen pals from the YMCA Trafton Senior Center on Tuesday, Oct. 21, for the first time this year. This meeting kicked off the monthly correspondence that will exist between the pairs and marked the sixth year of the pen pal partnership with the Trafton Center. In addition to visiting with each other, the pairings had refreshments and played several rounds of the trivia game “I Should Have Known That.”
