Medicare Open Enrollment

By Connie Garber

You have most likely seen lots of online posts and probably received some ads in your mail that it’s time to enroll in a Medicare plan. Open Enrollment began on Oct. 15 and runs until Dec. 7, with the plan effective Jan. 1, 2026.

A recent post from the Southern Maine Agency on Aging alerted us to several marketing violations that we should be aware of. If you experience ANY of these, you could be the victim of a scam or misconduct:

  • If you receive a phone call from an insurance company or someone representing themself as a broker for a Medicare plan, hang up.

  • If you receive an email from an insurance company or someone representing themself as a broker for a Medicare plan, and you have not given them permission to contact you by email, delete the email.

  • If someone knocks on your door and tries to sell you a Medicare plan, say no and close the door.

  • If you find a flyer, leaflet or door hanger on your vehicle or the front door of your home, put it in the recycle bin unless it’s regarding an appointment that you scheduled but missed.

All of these examples are violations of how Medicare plans are allowed to contact prospective clients.  The Southern Maine Agency on Aging offers free advice if you have any questions or concerns and can be contacted at 207-396-6524 or www.smaa.org.
