Holiday Events at Sanford-Springvale Historical Society

Press Release

Celebrate the holiday season with the Sanford-Springvale Historical Society.  The Victorians started our modern Christmas traditions like gift giving and Christmas trees, so what could be better than seeing Christmas in a Victorian home right here in Springvale?

It’s “Jingle and Mingle” time at the Society, Fridays and Saturdays, December 5, 6, 12 and 13. Take a break from holiday shopping and stop by to enjoy a walk-through tour of the historic Goodwin House where you will experience a beautiful display of Victorian decorations. This year, we are excited to announce that Partners Bank has agreed to sponsor our Victorian decorations. The house will be decorated like never before! Friday hours are 10:00 am to 4:00 pm and Saturdays, 10:00 am to 2:00 pm. There is no admission fee, but donations are always welcomed.

You can snap holiday photos inside the decorated Goodwin home, while listening to holiday carols. The Goodwin House features classic historic toys and games from the collection of the Historical Society.  Victorian children had fewer toys than children have today. Poor families made their own, such as cloth-peg dolls and paper windmills. Children would save their pocket money to buy marbles, a spinning top, skipping ropes, kites or cheap wooden toys. The wealthier families had more expensive toys. Girls played with dolls and tea sets while boys played with toy soldiers and marbles. Victorian traditions were very different from today’s traditions. Let’s put down the electronics and take a step back to a simpler time!

After your visit to the Goodwin House, stop in at the Historical Society’s Museum next door on Saturdays, December 6 and 13, to make reindeer puppets and other crafts with Executive Director, Patricia Violette-Adams. There will also be readings of “Twas the Night Before Christmas.”  This will be a fun time for the whole family.  Celebrate the season with us.

The Historical Museum and Edmund E. Goodwin House are located at 505 and 503 Main Street in Springvale. The museum is handicapped-accessible.

The Sanford-Springvale Historical Society provides a deeper understanding of community history in Sanford and Springvale. The museum is open every Friday from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm and Saturdays from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm. Visit their website at www.sanfordhistory.org or Facebook page for more event information.
