Last Tuesday evening, the Sanford-Springvale Rotary Club held its January Thaw event at Mee-D Thai restaurant in Sanford. A portion of the ticket price paid for the Thai buffet and the rest of the monies raised were pledged to Sanford Community Youth Alliance (SCYA) whose mission is to support unaccompanied students ages 14-21 who are at risk of becoming homeless.
According to school officials, an alarming number of students are unhoused for various reasons. SCYA exists to reduce that number and support youths in Sanford schools who are actively experiencing homelessness or are transitioning out of a temporary housing program. The group is also working to develop and train approved host families who can offer teens a stable home environment, either short or long term. This year, Sanford-Springvale’s January Thaw raised $10,000 for SCYA and also donated a mountain of warm clothing items brought in by the attendees. Over the past five years, this Rotary event has raised over $40,000 that has been given to organizations that work to alleviate homelessness in our community.
