The Sanford Fire Department was proudly showcasing its newly purchased thermal imaging camera, bringing a new era of firefighting technology to the town. The smoke and heat in a burning building often reduce visibility to next to nothing. This new camera would greatly aid firefighters in finding people in the chaos of a smoke-filled building. The camera cost over $18,000. The photo above shows what seven firefighters look like when captured by the new camera. 

Bill Roberts, chair of the Sanford Board of Selectmen, shared his New Year’s resolutions for the town. His goals for the year included increasing the town’s recycling program, decreasing the amount of traffic on Main Street, and obtaining grants to pay for conducting a traffic survey. 

The Redskin (Spartans) girls swim team sank the Freeport and North Yarmouth Academy teams in a joint swim meet. Sanford took first in nine of the 11 events, scoring 147 points to Freeport’s 72 and NYA’s 60. Top scorers were Leah Matthews, Jen Sitton, Allison Lewis, and Joanna Zamora. 

Motor vehicle accidents dominated the police log with four reportable accidents on Friday, Jan. 19 alone, when it snowed almost all day and into the night. For the week, 27 individuals were cited for a variety of offenses including aggravated assault, operating under the influence, and motor vehicle accidents. A cell phone and snowmobile were also reported stolen. 

Ice skaters were invited to come to the arena of the Brothers of Christian Instruction in Alfred to skate on Saturday and Sunday afternoon. Admission to the rink was $1 with skate rentals for 25 cents. Brother Marcel would sharpen skates for $1. 

Downeast Pharmacy advertised horse liniment as a way to ease arthritis pain in humans. 

A home was listed for sale with the following description – gorgeous contemporary cape with dormers, two full baths, four bedrooms, hardwood floors, cathedral ceiling, fieldstone hearth, and rear deck. The list price – $159,900.
