Elementary students show off their learning and growth: Kindergarten students at Margaret Chase Smith Elementary School proudly participated in their first classroom showcase on Friday, Jan. 23, sharing samples of their work and celebrating all they have learned in their Animals and Habitats unit. Families and staff in attendance observed the students as they explained new vocabulary, discussed animal needs, and highlighted the different center choices they have been exploring.
At Carl J. Lamb Elementary School, grade 2 students welcomed families to their learning showcase on Tuesday, Jan. 27, to share what they’ve learned in their Greek Gods/Goddesses unit of study. Students presented their knowledge and projects, demonstrating their understanding of Ancient Greek mythology.
Developing future-ready students is the focus: Following a months-long, community-driven process, the Sanford School Department has unveiled its Mission, Vision, Core Principles & Beliefs on Learning, and Portrait of a Future-Ready Graduate. The effort is based on the Maine Department of Education’s “Measure What Matters” initiative, which interviewed Mainers throughout the state — from Pre-K students to college presidents and from teachers to policymakers — to identify what makes schools successful.
A Steering Committee, comprised of education professionals, parents and students, city officials, business leaders and community members, worked through multiple feedback loops and revisions to arrive at a version that the Sanford School Committee approved for use at the start of the 2025-2026 school year. Johnathan Rideout, a Sanford High School senior and student in the Digital Design program at Sanford Regional Technical Center, created the design that was chosen as the official branding for the initiative.
The updated Mission, Vision, Core Principles & Beliefs on Learning, and Portrait of a Future-Ready Graduate framework will be used to guide decisions, programs, and practices across the district moving forward, keeping students’ futures at the center of all decision-making. To learn more about the comprehensive process followed as well as what makes up each component of the framework, go here.
