Winter Lecture Series at Historical Society Returns

Compiled by Barbara Sutcliffe
The Sanford-Springvale Historical Society will continue its popular winter lecture series in 2026.
The first lecture, this Sunday, February 1, focuses on General Lafayette’s important role in the American Revolution — including not only his service in the Continental Army but also his role as an intermediary between the newly formed United States and its ally, his homeland, France. Presenter Alan Hoffman will then explore Lafayette’s evolution from, at best, a blank slate on the slavery question when he joined the American Revolution, to becoming a leading advocate for the abolition of slavery, when Lafayette’s words and deeds inspired American abolitionists in the decades after his death in 1834.
The Historical Society invites the public to attend as it continues to cover different topics from American history on Sunday afternoons (see dates below). Program descriptions are available by clicking on the title link. All lectures begin at 3:00 pm and are FREE. Refreshments are served following each presentation.
