Sanford High School Teams Deliver Strong Postseason Performances

All three Spartan wrestlers earned podium finishes in their respective weight divisions at the Class A State Finals

Sanford High School student-athletes delivered strong postseason performances across a number of winter sports, with several teams advancing deep into the playoffs and individual athletes earning hardware at the state level.

The Spartans wrestling team had an outstanding showing at the Class A State Finals in Augusta, with all three competitors earning podium finishes. Junior Ryder LaChance took third place at 120 pounds, while sophomores Gabe Williams and Marcus Harriman rounded out the Spartan contingent with a third-place finish at 165 and a fourth-place finish at 215, respectively. All three advanced to the New England Qualifier.

The boys’ basketball team capped a strong 18-2 season with a run to the Class A South semifinals. Seeded second in the region, the Spartans dispatched #10 Bonny Eagle in the quarterfinals before falling to #6 seed Portland, 61-51, in the semis. The girls’ basketball team matched that run, also reaching the Class A South semifinals as the #2 seed. The Spartans knocked out #7 Thornton Academy 57-35 in the quarterfinals before falling to #3 South Portland, 43-38, in the semifinals.

The cheerleading team competed in the state competition, finishing 11th overall.

The Sanford girls’ indoor track team finished 11th out of 24 teams at the Class A State Championships at the University of Southern Maine on Monday, February 16. Mattea Peters was the Spartans’ top performer, taking second place in the 400-meter dash with a time of 1:01.47 and adding a 13th-place finish in the 200-meter dash in 27.85 seconds.

Georgia Whitman also podiumed, throwing 32 feet, 6 inches for fourth place in the shot put. At the SMAA Championships on February 7, Avery Wedge took second in the 55-meter dash, Isaac Pelletier finished third in the 800-meter run, Dezmend Donegan placed seventh in the 55-meter dash and sixth in the 200-meter dash, and Michael Mastraccio finished eighth in the two-mile run.
