Helping students brush up on good dental hygiene: Lili Cammett and Kim Ortoleva, dental assistants with Nasson Health Care, visited with students at Sanford Pride Elementary School earlier this month to share tips on maintaining good oral health. The visit took place during the Student Health Fair at the school.

MCS students get a lesson in Maine winter weather: Victoria Wisniewski, meteorologist at WMTW, visited Margaret Chase Smith Elementary School on Wednesday, Feb. 11, to talk about winter weather with the students. They discussed the different types of winter precipitation, the difference between snowstorms and blizzards, and the major snowstorms that have hit the area, including the state record. Students braved the chilly temperature outside for the station’s Weather at Your School segment, broadcasting live the forecast for various times of the school day.

SHS singers record with nationally recognized composer: On Friday, Feb. 13, the Sanford High School Chamber Singers were invited to perform and record with composer Jennifer Lucy Cook at the University of Southern Maine’s Osher School of Music in Portland. Cook is a nationally recognized composer and lyricist whose choral works are performed by high school, collegiate, and professional ensembles across the United States. She is also active in stage and screen composition, making her one of today’s most versatile and in-demand living composers.

During the collaboration, Sanford students recorded three of Cook’s choral works, including two performed independently by the Sanford Chamber Singers, and one combined piece alongside the Brunswick High School Chamber Choir, Scarborough High School Chamber Singers, and the Osher School of Music Chamber Singers. This opportunity provided the students with invaluable artistic insight and professional-level rehearsal and recording experience.

Volunteers needed to help fight food insecurity: Sanford Backpack Program is seeking volunteers. One opportunity is to help fill bags with food at Sanford High School and deliver them to the other Sanford school sites on Thursdays, 8:30 – 10 am, or for any portion of that time period. Another opportunity is to help at the Spart Mart at Sanford High School in the afternoons. Email lori@strongersanford.org for more information.

SROs celebrated for their role in the schools: To acknowledge the important work they do in Sanford’s schools, the Sanford Police Department recognized Officers Joe Jourdain and Chris Gosling on Sunday, Feb. 15, a day designated as National School Resource Officer Appreciation Day. Aside from being police officers, school resource officers are mentors, trusted adults, and role models for students. They help keep schools safe while also building positive relationships and supporting students when they need guidance.
