A group of brainstorming citizens guided by professionals envision transforming Cobb Stadium, long used for school sports, into a multi-use park.

The session last week was guided by Aceto Kimball Landscape Architecture and included representatives of youth soccer, baseball and football leagues, as well as city and school officials.

“The overall high consensus was to enhance the fields so they are more accommodating,” explained Seth Kimball.

Among the ideas discussed are building concession and bathroom facilities at a central location between Cobb Stadium and Blouin Fields, expanding the Cobb field to better accommodate soccer, installing both bleacher-style and earthen terrace seating in the hillside, installing a playground, and developing a series of looped, accessible walkways around the fields and linking to existing parking lots at Pride School, Sanford Middle School and Blouin Fields, Kimball said.

Participant David Mongeau said he was energized by the gathering and hopes to see Cobb become a community jewel for a variety of sports, events, exhibits and music. At future input sessions, he hopes to see more young people, he said.

Kimball’s team is collating the feedback received and hopes to present some draft concept recommendations to the city council in March.
