2026 is election year for all State Representatives and State Senators in Maine, as well as the Governor, US Representatives and one of our two US Senate seats. In York County, the offices of Sheriff and County Treasurer will be on the ballot as well.

Primary elections for Democratic and Republican candidates will be held June 9 at Sanford High School. Of Sanford’s four seats in the state legislature, there is only one contested primary: Shapleigh residents Marc A. Boisse and Clinton Wesley Phinney Jr. are vying for the Republican nomination for State Representative in District 141, which includes parts of Sanford and Springvale as well as the towns of Shapleigh and Newfield. Incumbent Lucas Lanigan is not seeking reelection.

The winner of the District 141 Republican primary will face off against Springvale resident Rebecca L. Flood Andrews, who is running unopposed in the Democratic primary, and independent candidate David Mongeau in the November general election.

The incumbents in Sanford’s other two State Rep. districts are also not running again. In District 142, currently represented by Anne-Marie Mastraccio, Ayn M. Hanselmann will be on the Democratic primary ballot and Gordon E. Frohloff is the candidate on the Republican side. In District 143, Ann Marie Frederick’s seat is being sought by Republican Eric H. Small and Democrat John R. Henkelman.

In our State Senate district, which also includes the towns of Lebanon, Alfred and Waterboro, incumbent Matthew A. Harrington is running on the Republican side, while Lebanon resident Mark H. Vigliotta will be on the Democratic primary ballot.

On June 9, voters will also decide whether to validate the School Department budget, currently being reviewed by the City Council, which will vote on it April 7. Residents are also petitioning to have two local issues on the ballot – one to overturn the City Council’s approval of a new Omnibus Tax Incentive Financing District for industrial properties in South Sanford, and one to place a temporary moratorium on municipal permits for large industrial developments with significant potential environmental impacts, such as the Aries biosolids gasification plant that is being proposed on Cyro Drive.

The Sanford Springvale News will have more information on the candidates and the ballot questions as we get closer to primary day.
