One sign that spring is really on the way, despite the weather forecast: The Sanford Garden Fair is happening next Saturday, March 28, bringing flowers, plants, seeds, garden supplies, information and much more to Sanford Memorial Gym.

The fair will be open from 10 am to 4 pm on both levels of the gym. Admission is $5, with children under 12 admitted free.

Features at the fair, which debuted last year, include plants from Farmfield Greenhouses, information from York County Beekeepers, examples of garden art from three sculptors, and a chance to learn more about the Three Rivers Land Trust and the Downtown Sanford Landscape Plan.

Visitors will have a chance to enter raffles for a guided nature tour, a flight by Southern Maine Aviation out of Sanford Airport, and a chainsaw sculpture. They can learn about how to help the Southern Maine Garden Club beautify the area, get their own community garden plot, rescue ailing plants and use safe lifting practices while gardening.

For a $25 donation, fairgoers can take home a canvas tote donated by Threads of Hope thrift store. The tote is decorated with sections of the downtown Love Sanford mural.

Classes and workshops to be offered on the gym’s lower level include container gardens, garden art, and

garden tips and games of 1776, offered by the Sanford Historical Society. Children’s activities will include face and fingernail painting and creating fairy gardens.

Food, including coffee and sweets, pizza and Caribbean appetizers, will be offered on both levels. Also featured will be door prizes, gift certificates, and a chance to talk to local writer Shawn Sullivan, whose book, “As Good as it Gets,” describes growing up in Sanford. The fair benefits the Sanford/Springvale Beautification Program for use at the Sullivan Memorial Plantings – named for Sullivan’s father Gary Sullivan – and replanting containers in the Main Street Marketplace. Strategies for a Sustainable Sanford is the fiscal sponsor.
