A recent collaboration between the Springvale Library and a local group of doll collectors created a memorable event for some young library patrons and their families. On March 25, members of the San-D-Over Dollers club hosted a Dolls and Books Tea to show kids how a story can come alive with dolls of the book’s characters.
Children’s Librarian Sheila Dube read the story of Dahlia, a doll who’s not afraid to get dirty, having adventures with her little owner. A “tea” of juice and homemade treats was served by club members, after which the families enjoyed cutting out and gluing together a special paper doll of Hitty, the real doll who was made famous in the Newbury Medal winning book “Hitty, Her First Hundred Years,” published in 1929.
The backdrop for the event was a large display of dolls and books put together by the club members and library staff. Characters from “Little Women,” “Anne of Green Gables” and “Mary Poppins” mingled with Raggedy Ann, Harry Potter and many others. Attendees brought their own favorite dolls along to share in the fun.
San-D-Over Dollers was established in 1992 by doll collectors from Sanford and Dover, NH. It is one of hundreds of clubs which form the United Federation of Doll Clubs, headquartered in Kansas City. UFDC’s mission is to promote appreciation of dolls through conservation, education and research.
