Beware of these local scam tactics: The Sanford Police Department posted on social media several examples of scam attempts that were reported in March. Some incidents involved callers posing as law enforcement or federal agents, such as Customs and Border Patrol, attempting to scam victims with fake investigations or requests for money or information. Other scams involved callers pretending to collect donations on behalf of the police or other organizations, or victims being told they won a prize online but asked to pay a fee to receive it. Individuals also reported being contacted online and later receiving alarming messages, including fake kidnapping threats, designed to scare them into responding or sending money. In another incident, a resident fell prey to Medicare phishing by giving their Social Security number to a caller claiming to be associated with Medicare. While most of these incidents did not result in financial loss, they give insight into common tactics that scammers are actively using in the community.
