The Sanford Arts Commission is getting ready to hold its first Art Walk of the year, now hosted by the Springvale Public Library.

Every second Friday, from May 8 through Aug. 14, from 4 to 7:30 pm, the Art Walk will turn the area around the library into a lively, family-friendly showcase of local talent. From paintings and photography to sculpture and performance, the goal is to showcase the range of artistic expression thriving within the Sanford community and beyond. Thanks in part to sponsorships from Shain’s of Maine, Springvale Hardware and Paint, and Zippy Copy Center, the Art Walk continues to be free to attendand open to everyone, from art experts to people who just like looking at interesting things while holding a coffee. There is something for everyone – family-friendly activities, music, perhaps even poetry and other performances. In June, July and August,  come for the Art Walk but stay for the Springvale Library’s Music After Dark starting at 6:30 pm on the patio.

The Art Walk, formerly presented at Central Park in Sanford, gives artists a chance to share their work, meet new people, and maybe even explain what inspired them. The event is intentionally low-pressure, especially for those who may be new to showing their work. Artists can participate without jumping through hoops, and there is no fee to secure a space and no need for an elaborate booth setup.

The Sanford Arts Commission is putting out a call for artists of all kinds to take part. Painters, photographers, sculptors, fiber artists, crafters, or those working in a medium that does not fit neatly into a category, are invited to participate. Demonstrations of crafts are also encouraged like live painting, pottery, or printmaking, but could just as easily include dance, martial arts, music, culinary arts or any other creative practice. There is space here for those who love their work and want to share it with the Sanford community. The Art Walk’s goal is to celebrate creativity in all its forms, not just what hangs on a wall.

Local businesses are encouraged to get in on the action. Any shops, cafés, or restaurants around Springvale that will be open or want to feature artwork, or food trucks who want to park on Main Street during the event, should email artwalksanford@gmail.com to coordinate marketing efforts.
