Students’ hard work is celebrated at annual banquet: Again this year, Sanford Elks Lodge #1470 celebrated academic achievement across Sanford’s schools at its Youth Banquet. Students, families and community members gathered on May 6 to recognize students from Sanford Middle School, Sanford Regional Technical Center, and Sanford High School. Sanford Middle School’s Sophia O’Connell and Eamon McGuckin-Welsch were both named Junior Student of the Year. At Sanford Regional Technical Center, two students were honored for achievements — Olivia Adornetto in Early Education and Alex Janousek in Precision Manufacturing. At Sanford High School, individual honors went to valedictorian Isabella McCall, who was named Student of the Year, and Teen of the Year honors were shared by salutatorian Annalise Stimmell and Matthew Hebert. Hebert will attend New England College in the fall, majoring in special education and playing baseball.
A total of 50 academically ranked seniors from Sanford High School were honored throughout the banquet. The top 10 seniors were introduced individually, recognizing their achievements and their post-secondary plans. Topping the list were McCall (St. Joseph’s College, exercise science, and playing soccer), followed by Stimmel (St. Joseph’s College, pre-med track). Rounding out the top 10, in order, were Hannah Labbe (Bentley University, finance), Leah Soucy (Colby College, psychology), Addison Gendreau (Duquesne University, speech pathology), Lily Gillis (University of Maine at Orono, ecology and environmental sciences), Ava Hudson (New England College, business, and playing soccer), Kai Hamblin (York County Community College), Alex Janousek (Southern Maine Community College, precision machining), and Isabella Tounge (Empire Beauty School, cosmetology). Labbe was also a recipient of the 2026 Legacy Scholarship from the National Elks Foundation.
Students honored for CTE achievements: More than 80 Sanford Regional Technical Center students from across a wide array of Career and Technical Education programs were inducted into the National Technical Honor Society (NTHS) during a ceremony held on May 6 at the Sanford Performing Arts Center. Matt Petermann, SRTC director, welcomed attendees, and Career Aspirations and ELO coordinator Sally MacDougal delivered the NTHS slogan as part of the program.
The event, honoring returning members and welcoming new junior and senior inductees, celebrated the achievements of students who have demonstrated excellence in career and technical education programs. The evening included a recognition of the seven attributes that define NTHS membership — leadership, skill, honesty, service, citizenship, scholarship, and character — which inductees are expected to uphold both at SRTC and in their future careers. New Mainers intern is SRTC alum: The Sanford Mainers have added another intern for the summer. Lila Sprague is taking on the role of PA Announcer & Radio Station Producer for the 2026 season. Sprague is an alumna of the Wells-Ogunquit CSD and Sanford Regional Technical Center, where she was a SkillsUSA state champion, earning a gold medal on a Television Video Production team, and a national competitor. Although she is finishing her freshman year at the University of South Carolina, where she is majoring in broadcast journalism, Sprague brings a great deal of experience to the Mainers. She completed internships at 104.3 Seacoast Oldies and Atlantic Harmonies Youth Choirs, and at the university, she hosts a WUSC FM Columbia radio show and produces for SGTV – Student Gamecock Television.
Student talent, courage and creativity take center stage: Over 40 students in the third and fourth grades at Margaret Chase Smith Elementary School participated in the Variety Show at the school on May 7. Leading up to the performance, students spent weeks preparing, practicing, and encouraging one another. Their hard work was evident across the variety of entertaining acts that spanned dancing, singing, gymnastics, comedy sketches, and clogging.
