Nashville-bound singer having a grand ole time: Country pop singer/songwriter Madilynn Treasure, age 11, has been nominated for Artist of the Year (Under 18), to be presented at the Josie Music Awards ceremony at the Grand Ole Opry House in Nashville on Sept. 20. The Josie Music Awards, in its twelfth year, is recognized as the largest and premier independent music awards globally. Treasure, a Springvale resident, is no stranger to Nashville. She sang and played her ukulele at the iconic Bluebird Cafe at the age of 9, making her the youngest to perform at that venue. The Josie Music Awards show can be seen on Sept. 20 by downloading JMA Network TV on Roku or Amazon Fire TV.

In celebration of National Health Center Week, the organization is holding a Patient & Community Appreciation Day on Tuesday, Aug. 4, at 15 Oak St. in Springvale. Patients and members of the community are welcome to drop in between 8 am and 5 pm to enjoy light refreshments, receive fun giveaways, and learn more about the services provided at the facility.
Elks fundraiser makes a difference in kids’ lives: The Sanford Elks held the 4th annual Ray Bourre’s Day on July 11 to benefit the Maine Children’s Cancer Program (MCCP). Held at Iron Tails Saloon in Acton, the event included food, drink, music, and plenty of chances to win items and experiences through raffles and auctions. A total of $34,000 was raised for MCCP children fighting cancer and blood disorders.
A long-term strategy built on diverse sources of revenue: Waypoint Maine recently acquired the Little Dolphin School, an early childhood education provider with programs serving infants through PreK ages as well as a full-day private kindergarten program, along with the Little Dolphin Marketplace. The school operates in Westbrook and Scarborough, and the shopping plaza is located in Scarborough. According to a Mainebiz article dated July 24, the acquisition looks to bolster the long-term financial sustainability of both Waypoint and Little Dolphin School by diversifying their sources of revenue. Medicaid provides a significant portion of Waypoint’s program funding; however, changing federal and state policies make that model less reliable. Instead, Waypoint is looking to business and real estate investments to broaden its sources of funding. The acquisition also expands access to Waypoint’s services.
In October 2025, Waypoint Maine merged with The Progress Center, expanding services across southern and western Maine for individuals and families living with intellectual and developmental disabilities, autism spectrum disorders and behavioral health challenges. Waypoint is at 5 Dunaway Drive in Sanford.
The sky’s the limit for these campers: There is still time for kids ages 12 – 16 to sign up for Maine ACE Camp, running Aug. 5 – 8 at Sanford Seacoast Regional Airport. The day camp runs 7:30 am – 6 pm each day. Through classroom instruction, hands-on activities, and field trips, campers are introduced to many aspects of aviation — both military and civilian. Weather permitting, campers get to fly in at least one general aviation airplane during the week. The cost is $500. Surf or turf, the choice is yours: The annual Lobster Bake at the First Baptist Church, 429 Main St. in Springvale, is scheduled for Saturday, Aug. 22, at 6 pm. The menu will consist of a 1.25 lb. lobster ($25, plus $12.50 each for additional lobsters), 12 oz. sirloin steak ($25), or half of a barbecued chicken ($17.50) served with sides, a dessert and a beverage. Hamburgers and hot dogs ($5 each) will also be available.

The stage is calling: Audition sign-ups for Nasson Little Theatre’s winter production of “Peter Pan” are open. Auditions will be held Aug. 28 – 29 with possible call backs Aug. 30. Following the audition, a brief group dance audition will be held. To be considered, participants must be available for all shows, which are scheduled for Dec. 4 – 5 and 11 – 12, along with the entirety of tech week. Those auditioning are asked to bring a headshot, resume, brief monologue and 16 – 32 bars of sheet music. 5K walk, craft fair help support a young cancer patient: The 6th Annual Heart, Peace and Love for Kids 5K Walk and Craft Fair is scheduled for Saturday, Aug. 15, at 668 Main St. in Sanford. Registration opens at 9 am, followed by the walk at 10 am. This year’s beneficiary is two-year-old Camden, who is battling Langerhans Cell Histiocystosis. Camden loves all types of sports and balls, reggae music, playing his ukulele, and his family. To join the 5K walk, visit Heart, Peace and Love 5K Walk.
VFW canteen closes for August: Effective Aug. 1, the canteen at VFW Post 9935, 1 Hutchinson St. in Sanford, will be closed for 30 days. The organization is having some much-needed repairs done and will reopen in September. Hall rentals and meetings will still occur during August.
Slots, cards, craps, roulette — the choice is yours: The YMCA Trafton Senior Center is offering a day trip to Oxford Casino on Wednesday, Aug. 26. Seniors can try their luck at the casino and have lunch on their own. The YMCA bus leaves Sanford at 9:30 am. The cost of the trip is $20. For more information, or to register, call 207-457-0080.
New WWI exhibit includes a local focus: The Sanford-Springvale Historical Society’s annual exhibition, which opens on Sunday, Aug. 2, at 3 pm, will feature two themes this year — “Over There: Honoring Maine’s Sons and Service During WWI” and “Gas, Disease, and Loss: Hazardous Conditions of the Great War.” World War I, fought from 1914 to 1918 across Europe, saw unprecedented levels of carnage and destruction, resulting in the deaths of more than 16 million people — soldiers and civilians alike.
The exhibits will also focus on many soldiers from Maine, including those from Sanford and Springvale. In addition to resources from SSHS collections, loaned objects from the Maine Historical Society, the Maine Military Museum and private families in the area will be on display, noted Patricia Violette-Adams, SSHS executive director. “Local historian Joseph Doiron is our chief advisor and contributed a great deal to the installation of the exhibits,” said Violette-Adams.
Admission is free and includes a brief lecture on the exhibits. Refreshments will be served following the opening. The museum, at 505 Main St. in Springvale, is handicapped accessible.
Monthly food distribution for seniors: Any York County senior aged 60 and older is welcome to receive produce and non-perishables at the Senior Citizen Food Distribution held at Crossroads United Methodist Church on Thursday, Aug. 13, 10 – 11:30 am. The distribution is a monthly event that hosts two different programs — one open to all seniors and the other based on income eligibility. Therefore, every senior who attends will receive food. Applications will be available on site for the Commodity Supplemental Food Program (CSFP). The church is at the intersection of Route 202 and Grammar Road. Are you ready for some football? The 2026 Junior and Mite Football Jamborees, put on by the Southern Maine Youth Football League and hosted by the Sanford-Springvale Youth Athletic Association, will be held at Cobb Stadium on Saturday, Aug. 29. Teams from Sanford, Biddeford, Gorham, Massabesic, Saco, Scarborough, Westbrook and Windham are included. For mites (grades 3/4), gates open at 7 am, followed by weigh-ins, an opening ceremony, and games running 9 – 11:40 am. For juniors (grades 5/6), gates open at 11:30 am, followed by weigh-ins, an opening ceremony, and games running 2:45 – 3:25 pm. In case of rain, the jamboree will be held Sunday, Aug. 30.
