This week, I have a book from “Lost in the Stacks.” This is what we call books that are great but have fallen off of people’s radar. They’re not New York Times bestsellers and aren’t on any book lists, but a librarian can walk you right to the shelf to find these gems. This week, I bring you to France to walk in the shoes of Chief Inspector Bruno.
In the heart of the Périgord region in southern France, Bruno Courrèges serves as the only police officer in the small village of St. Denis. A former soldier, Bruno is far more interested in preserving village life than handing out tickets. He knows everyone, cooks beautifully, tends his garden and appreciates a good bottle of wine. But when a brutal crime disturbs the peace, Bruno is drawn into an investigation that reaches beyond the village and into France’s complicated past.
While these aren’t heavy, edge-of-your-seat crime novels, they’re full of mystery and murder immersed in the culture of the French countryside.
