Applications are open through Oct. 30 for the second phase of Habitat for Humanity’s housing development on Island Avenue in Sanford. The program, which allows prospective homeowners to buy housing in part by helping to build it, has finished three houses in town this year and will dedicate its newest on Sept. 15.
Habitat York County is offering help for those interested in applying to buy a new home through the program. A drop-in application information session will be held Saturday, Sept. 12, from 11 am to 1 pm at Goodall Library. In addition, information packets are available at several locations, including Goodall and the Sanford and Springvale branches of Kennebunk Savings Bank, Light House Credit Union and Partners Bank.
Habitat York County has built 40 homes since 1985. Habitat home buyers purchase their homes through an affordable mortgage with monthly payments designed to be no more than 30% of household income. Homeowner partnership with Habitat York County also requires participation in home construction, known as “sweat equity,” and offers additional support including financial education. In addition, the organization offers no-cost essential home weatherization and safe mobility repairs and upgrades to low-income homeowners 55 + and those living with disabilities.
