Heating Assistance for York County Residents as Winter Approaches

As colder temperatures begin to settle across southern Maine, many York County residents are already thinking about the cost of keeping their homes warm this winter. Community organizations are encouraging households to start planning now and explore available assistance programs before facing a heating emergency.

The York County Community Action Corporation (YCCAC) is currently helping residents apply for the Home Energy Assistance Program (HEAP), which provides eligible homeowners and renters with financial assistance to offset home heating and energy costs. Agency officials say many people are surprised to learn that income eligibility limits may be higher than expected, making assistance available to more households than they realize.

Residents do not need to wait until they run out of fuel to seek help. In fact, YCCAC encourages households to explore their options early. A typical heating oil tank holds about 240 usable gallons when full and planning can provide more flexibility when fuel levels begin to drop.

“We want people to know that heating assistance isn’t only for an emergency,” said Karen Winton, Director of Economic Opportunity and Housing Stability at YCCAC. “If heating costs are putting pressure on your household budget, we encourage you to reach out and see if you qualify. A little extra help with heating costs can make a meaningful difference during a Maine winter!”

In addition to HEAP, York County residents can access free guidance through Southern Maine Energy Navigators, a program that helps homeowners explore weatherization improvements, heat pumps, rebates, tax credits, and other energy-saving opportunities. The service is available regardless of HEAP eligibility.

Last year alone, YCCAC processed more than 5,500 completed HEAP applications, and 3,528 York County households received heating assistance benefits. Sanford was among the communities with the highest application volume.
