Local author C.S. Drouin, a former Springvale resident, is introducing readers to “W.T.F. 27: No One Fights Alone!,” a dystopian action thriller that begins with a seemingly simple prison work detail and grows into a fight for the future of a country its characters no longer recognize.
The novel follows 12 inmates assigned to an enormous prison garden in North Texas. Sent to plant watermelons at the far edge of the property, the men cross a forbidden boundary near an old tote road. They expect a chance to get away from confinement. Instead, they encounter a nation that has changed drastically while they were locked behind prison walls.
At the center of the story is Ary, a physically imposing but unassuming inmate who has never sought leadership. His first concern is finding the men separated from his work crew. That mission leads him through danger, captivity and uneasy alliances, including a relationship with Evelyn, a woman whose identity connects her to the struggle over the country’s future.
The novel blends elements of action, suspense, political dystopia and character-driven drama. Rather than following a conventional prison-break formula, “W.T.F. 27” uses the escape as the opening act of a much larger story. The tension shifts from the immediate danger of crossing a boundary to the moral questions that arise when ordinary people confront a system built on fear. As Ary’s responsibilities grow, he must decide not only whom to save, but what kind of country the survivors are trying to rebuild.
The author’s connection to the area is personal: Drouin previously lived in Springvale, making this a new-book announcement with a link to the Sanford–Springvale community. He is currently hospitalized while awaiting a heart transplant and continues his writing and book-promotion efforts during that time.
