By a 5-1 vote, the Sanford Planning Board on Sept. 2 recommended that the City Council reject an application for a zoning amendment to allow car storage on Gatehouse Road, near Sanford Seacoast Regional Airport.
The proposal from Michael Kuna was initially supported by the Sanford and Kennebunk Kennebunkport water districts and Airport Manager Allison Navia, until it was explained that the amendment would apply to the whole airport zone rather than just one property. The Kennebunk district gets 60 percent of its water from Branch Brook, which runs through the area. Sanford Water District said that the area includes a wellhead protection zone. The districts had concerns about the potential for problems resulting from storing gas onsite.
The only vote in favor of the amendment was from board Chair Jace Clarke, who said he believes warehousing in that area is consistent with the Comprehensive Plan.
The applicant still could apply for a contract zone.
In other business last month:
Wilderness Way: On Sept. 16, the board unanimously approved amendments to a subdivision application on New Dam Road. The project was scaled down from eight lots to three, and a driveway directly off New Dam Road was removed from the earlier plan. The project had been tabled at the board’s Aug. 5 meeting.
St. Therese of Lisieux Parish: Also on Sept.16, the board unanimously approved plans from St. Therese of Lisieux Parish (Holy Family Church) to build an 8,000-square-foot addition. The space will include a function hall with classrooms, a kitchen and a food pantry at 66 North Ave.
