“Mistfall: Armageddon,” a tabletop roleplaying game from Sanford’s 7th Reality Games, comes out Oct. 31
Reed Logan Westgate and Bryan Santamore have been best friends since second grade. That friendship has already produced seven novels. This Halloween it produces a game.
The two Sanford residents, both graduates of Sanford High School, will release “Mistfall: Armageddon,” a tabletop roleplaying game, on Saturday, Oct. 31. It is the first game from 7th Reality Games, the studio they co-founded. The two believe it is the first tabletop roleplaying game to come out of Sanford. The game is set in the world of Westgate’s dark urban fantasy novels, published under the name Reed Logan Westgate.
The seven books share one world, which Westgate calls the Baku-verse. The Baku Trilogy is set in present-day Portland. A thousand-year-old necromancer walks Exchange Street. Demons run the nightclubs. The Soulstealer trilogy follows the same necromancer back through the Crusades, Hungary and Rome. A novella, The Druid of the Morrigu, is set on Mount Greylock in Massachusetts.
“I write about Portland because it is the city I know well enough to break properly,” Westgate said. “It is small enough to cross on foot and old enough to have layers.”
“Mistfall: Armageddon” hands that world to players. In a tabletop roleplaying game, a group of friends creates characters and tells a story together around a table, with dice deciding what happens next. One player serves as the Narrator and runs the world. “In the Baku-verse, the line between reality and nightmare is thinner than you think,” Westgate writes on the game’s website.
Players dive into “Portland’s supernatural underbelly where angels, demons, and other powers wage a secret war in alleys, nightclubs, and crumbling sanctuaries.” Its rules, the site says, “are built to spotlight character choices, dramatic turns, and personal arcs, not bookkeeping.”
The “Mistfall: Armageddon Core Rulebook” is on sale Oct. 31 or as a PDF at mistfall-armageddon.com. Game accessories will be sold through The Game Crafter, novels are listed at rlwestgate.com/books. FMI:mistfall-armageddon.com.
