The Sanford High School Theater Company has been hard at work on its upcoming production of “Peter and the Starcatcher,” which will open on Friday, Nov. 13

The show serves as a prequel to the classic tale “Peter Pan”, following its iconic and beloved characters before the events of that story took place. The play answers the question of how each of these characters and places came to be and shows Peter’s motivation for hating grown-ups and the entire “nonsensical” concept of growing up.

Stage director Brett Williams describes the production as a “great story of friendship and loyalty.” He added that this is a very “creative show that offers the opportunity to just interpret freely and just […] go crazy with it,” which is something that he has really liked about bringing this production to life.

“Baker and I have co-directed, [what will be] 15 shows together, so we really do have it down to a science,” stated Williams, referring to co-director, Kristie Baker. However, he also highlighted the various challenging elements that the cast and crew have encountered and overcome in the production process of “Peter and the Starcatcher.” The musical and dance components of this show, which are untraditional for a straight play, have required Williams to take on the responsibility of coordinating those aspects in addition to his role as director. The various touring performances coming to the SPAC throughout the fall also made tucking the entire show into the wings quite tough, given the large scale of the props and set pieces. “The process has been fun, but difficult,” Williams said.

Williams and Baker’s main goal with each production they put on at Sanford High School (SHS) is to create core memories for each of their students to fondly look back on. “The payoff isn’t how many people are at the show […] or how wonderful [or] perfect you were in the show,” said Williams. To him, the most important part of the show is making sure each kid has a positive experience in the theater program at SHS. “Every year is different, every show is different, every cast is different, but […] we have a really cool culture in our theater crew right now.”

Three performances will take place over the weekend.  Friday and Saturday shows will take place at 7 pm. A Sunday matinee will be at 2 pm.

Tickets are $18 for adults, $14 for seniors, and free for students. Tickets are available at www.SanfordPAC.org or by calling 207-206-1126.
