L to R: Charlene Plante and Pete Tranchemontagne

Election Results: Plante Joins Tranchemontagne on City Council

By Zendelle Bouchard

Sanford and Springvale Voters Elected Charlene “Cheeny” Plante to a three-year term on the City Council Tuesday and granted incumbent Councilor Pete Tranchemontagne a second term.

Plante, a Sanford native and graduate of Sanford High School, is internationally known for her multiple appearances on the reality show “Naked and Afraid.” She is a veteran of the U.S. Air Force where she trained pilots in SERE (Survival, Evasion, Resistance and Escape) techniques. After leaving the military, she became a Maine guide and wilderness survival instructor.

Tranchemontagne, a longtime resident and SHS alumnus, owns a medical cannabis dispensary in South Sanford. He was elected to the Council in 2022. During his first term he has served on the Airport Advisory Committee and Land Bank Authority as well as the Council’s Property and Solid Waste Subcommittees.

Unopposed candidates Jonathan Stimmell and Melissa Simpson were reelected to the School Committee. Melissa Alipalo will serve another term as a Water District Trustee. On the board of Sewerage District Trustees, incumbent Gregory Ackroyd was reelected for a three-year term, and Michael Fraser was elected to fill the last two months of an unexpired term plus three years.

In the two statewide referendum questions, Sanford and Springvale voters reflected the overall results closely, with more than 61% voting no on Question 1 (compared to 64% across the state) and more than 59% voting yes on Question 2 (63% statewide).

There are currently 14,622 registered voters in Sanford. Turnout was 36% with 5,250 ballots cast, which is considered very good for an off-year election. For comparison, the turnout was 27% in 2023 and 29% in 2021.
