Elementary students honor veterans in different ways: Sanford’s three elementary schools each celebrated Veterans Day to honor and remember those who have served the country. Carl J. Lamb Elementary hosted their 3rd annual Veterans Day Celebration in the cafeteria, where each grade performed songs for the veterans in attendance. In another annual celebration, Margaret Chase Smith Elementary welcomed veterans to their 4th annual Breakfast with Veterans in the school gymnasium. The Sanford Pride Elementary chorus students took their gift of music to Pinnacle Health and Rehab in Sanford, where they sang for veterans and brightened their day. The students also created handmade cards and letters to show their appreciation and let the veterans know they are remembered and valued.
SRTC student internship lays a career foundation: Senior Hannah Chambers, a student in Sanford Regional Technical Center’s Engineering and Architecture program, is gaining hands-on experience in the construction industry through her internship at Eldredge Lumber Company — and confirming her decision to enter the workforce immediately after graduation.
When Chambers attended SRTC’s Career and College Fair last fall, she met with Lindsey Eldredge at the Eldredge Lumber table. Eldredge remembers that first meeting clearly: “She made incredible eye contact. She was dressed professionally, and she shook my hand.” Chambers’ persistence and determination following that meeting helped her land an internship at the company’s contractor desk. Three to four days each week, Chambers immerses herself in the building materials business.
The experience has solidified her career path. Rather than pursuing a college degree to become an architect, she’s decided on becoming a draftsman. “This internship has helped me know that even if I am not going to college, I can still make it, doing what I love,” Chambers said. Remember to stop, drop and roll: The Sanford Fire Department recently visited Kindergarten and Pre-K students at Margaret Chase Smith Elementary School to discuss fire safety. During the visit, firefighters taught the students essential safety skills, including the “stop, drop, and roll” technique and how to respond when hearing a smoke alarm. Students were thrilled to see firefighters demonstrate their protective gear and had the special opportunity to explore a real fire truck up close.

Early childhood educators show off the ribbon wands they made at a recent professional development class. The wands are just one of the tools they can use to promote active learning in the classroom.

Bringing active learning to life: Partners for Healthier Communities and its Healthy Eating Active Living team recently participated in a professional development session for early childhood educators in the Sanford/Springvale area. The training focused on helping them inspire movement, creativity and healthy habits in their classrooms. Casey Marcotte led the group, made up of educators from several childcare centers, in a session titled “Putting Play in Motion: Simple Ways to Inspire Movement in Infants and Toddlers.” Participants learned how pairing movement with reading boosts learning, attention and physical development. They also experienced how bubble play can teach young children how to blow, chase and pop bubbles, all supporting their motor skills and coordination. In another segment, they used handmade ribbon wands to encourage movement, rhythm, spatial awareness and imaginative play. The training session was planned and organized by The Basics Sanford.
A good time to focus on the future: On the first Wednesday of every month, Sanford Community Adult Education and York County Community College are hosting an information table 10 am – 1 pm at Goodall Library. Whether it’s regarding earning a high school diploma, assessing college readiness, finding support for a few subjects, or asking about enrichment opportunities, representatives are available to discuss available options.
Got trucks? Margaret Chase Smith Elementary School PTA is looking for fun vehicles to be part of the Turkey Trot’s Touch-a-Truck activity on Saturday, Nov. 22, at the school. The event runs 12:30 – 2:30 pm, but trucks are needed at the event by noon. Contact mcsptame@gmail.com to participate.

Making intergenerational connections: On Nov. 5, the Pre-K students at St. Thomas School welcomed their “foster grandparents.” The volunteers, who are parishioners from Saint Thérèse of Lisieux Parish, engaged the children by reading, singing, dancing, learning and crafting. Fr. Bill Labbe joined in to share two stories with the students about leaves and Veterans Day.
Every food item helps: The Holiday Food Drive Competition is underway at Sanford Middle School. This effort stocks the school’s food closet, helping students and families every day, and helps put together more than 40 Thanksgiving meals for Sanford families. The food drive is collecting gravy, stuffing, instant potatoes, rice, mac-n-cheese, soup, snacks, cereal and peanut butter. The competition runs from Nov. 4 to Dec. 4.
Good food, laughter and local love at school community dinner: Families with children enrolled in Sanford schools are invited to The Heart of Sanford Community Dinner, a free event to be held Tuesday, Nov. 25, 5 – 7 pm at the Margaret Chase Smith Elementary School cafeteria. The organizers have invited families to enjoy a warm Thanksgiving meal, friendly faces and local hospitality. All ages are welcome. To attend, register here by Friday, Nov. 21.
