The City of Sanford has issued its annual appeal for residents to join city boards and committees. (See the public notice on page 3.) These citizen-staffed panels help the city run smoothly and make decisions that affect our community every day. Here’s a little more information to help you choose where you can make the greatest impact.
Are you interested in the arts? If so, the Sanford Arts Commission might be right for you. The Commission has a multi-purpose mission including inspiring a sense of place and pride in the City of Sanford, supporting and promoting local artists and cultural assets, and assisting and advising the city on arts and culture matters. It sponsors the monthly 2nd Friday Art Walks in Central Park and other activities. The Commission currently meets on the 4th Wednesday of the month at 9:30 am, but is considering changing to a day and time that would be convenient for more people.
Love the outdoors? The Trails Committee could use your help planning, developing and maintaining the best trail system in southern Maine. They meet the 3rd Monday of the month at 7 pm via Zoom and then coordinate work parties to tackle projects on the trails when it’s convenient for members.
Want to get really involved in our community? The Planning Board meets on the first and third Wednesday evenings of each month at City Hall (unless a holiday necessitates rescheduling). This vitally important board takes a look at all proposed new developments in town and votes on recommended zoning ordinance changes before they go to the City Council. No experience in zoning and development? No problem, extensive training is available.
Is sports your thing? The Recreation Advisory Board meets the 3rd Wednesday of each month at 6 pm via Zoom to offer suggestions and recommendations on the great activities for all ages that our Parks & Rec Department has to offer.
If you don’t have a lot of time but still want to do your part for the city, consider applying to the Board of Appeals or the Board of Assessment Review. These don’t have regular scheduled meetings, but come together occasionally when there are appeals to be heard.
The application form for all these positions and more can be found here. The deadline to apply is Monday, Dec. 22 at 5:30 pm.
