The Sanford Schools Legacy Foundation is inviting community members to recognize longtime educator Karen Webb by supporting a campaign to name the Alternative Education suite at Sanford High School in her honor.

Webb is retiring this June after nearly 30 years with the Sanford School Department, primarily as the director of the Alternative Education program and English teacher. Throughout her career, she has worked with students whose needs are not always met in traditional classroom settings, helping them stay engaged and on track to graduate.

Under Webb’s leadership, the program has become known for its supportive, relationship-based approach and strong outcomes. With small class sizes and individualized instruction, students are able to build confidence, reconnect with learning, and achieve academic success.

Former student Sophie Bilodeau previously shared with the Sanford School Committee that the program made graduation possible. “I didn’t even think that anything like that existed for me until I was given the option,” she said.

Webb’s contributions have earned widespread respect within the school community. She was recognized with the Golden Apple Award during the 2023–2024 school year for her meaningful impact on students. Many students cited her support when they opposed a move by the School Committee to discontinue the program in 2024.

Sanford High School Principal Tracy Gibson, who worked alongside Webb for 15 years, said her influence is lasting. “Few educators leave a mark as deep and lasting as hers,” Gibson said. “Karen has a rare gift for restoring confidence in students who had lost their way. It is only fitting that we honor her legacy with this dedication.”

The Legacy Foundation aims to raise $3,000 to secure naming rights for the Alternative Education suite in Webb’s honor. All funds will directly support the program and its students. “Our mission is to enrich student experiences beyond what public funding alone can provide,” said the Legacy Foundation President Lydia Lehoux. “This program is a powerful example of that mission in action.”
