Organizers believe they have submitted more than enough petition signatures to force a vote on Aries Clean Technologies’ plans to develop a biosolids gasification plant in south Sanford.
Stop the Sludge turned in 1,036 petition signatures to the Sanford City Clerk’s office Wednesday, several hundred more than the required minimum of 736 to force a vote. The extra signatures were a cushion, as the verification process usually results in the rejection of some signatures.
The petition calls for a 180-day moratorium on the project to give the city time to review city ordinances and obtain independent verification of claims made by Aries. The City Council has the option of adopting the proposed moratorium or putting it out to Sanford voters on the November general election ballot.
Spokesperson Dax Morrow said the petition drive was an affirming experience for her.
“I think it just speaks to how powerfully this community can rally. Everyone was enthusiastic; everyone wanted to sign. It was exciting to be a part of – to see the community come together in an unexpected way … People tend to underestimate Sanford.”
